    Japanese Grammar – Starter 8

    ■ 【Place】で V-ます

    Meaning: [Someone] does V at/in [Place].

    Formation:
    Place + で + V ます
    Key Point:

    The particle で indicates the location where an action takes place.

    Used to explain where activities or actions happen.

    Example
    ここは 食堂[しょくどう]です。ここで 昼[ひる]ご飯[はん]を 食[た]べます。 This is the cafeteria. This is where we eat lunch.

    ■ 【Person】は【Place】に います

    Meaning: [Person] is at/in [Place].

    Formation:
    Person + は + Place + に + います
    Key Point:

    います is the マス-form of いる, used for people and animals.

    に indicates the location of existence.

    The person is marked with は as the topic.

    To ask where someone is, use:

    ・【Person】は どこに いますか

    ・【Person】は どこ ですか?

    Example
    A :
    田中[たなか]さんは、どこに いますか? Where is Tanaka-san?
    B:
    会議[かいぎ]室[しつ]です。 In the meeting room.

    A:
    山下[やました]さんは? Where is Yamashita-san?
    B:
    倉庫[そうこ]に いますよ。 In the warehouse.。

    ■ (【Person】は いません

    Meaning: “[Person] is not here.” / “[Person] is not present.”

    Formation:
    Person + は + いません
    Key Point:

    Negative form of います, used for people and animals.

    Indicates absence or that someone is not at a certain place.

    ■ (【Person】は いないです

    Meaning: “[Person] is not here.” (casual)

    Formation:
    Person + は + いないです
    Key Point:

    More casual than いません.

    Common in spoken conversation.

    Example
    A:
    田中[たなか]さん、いますか? Is Tanaka-san here?
    B:
    今[いま]、いません。たぶん、会議[かいぎ]室[しつ]に います。 No, he’s not here. He might be in the meeting room.

    A:
    アンさん、いますか? Is An-san here?
    B:
    いないですね 。 No, she’s not.
    A:
    どこに いますか? Where is she?
    B:
    ちょっと わかりません。 Sorry, I don’t know.

    ■ 【Something】は【Place】に あります

    Meaning: “[Something] is at/in [Place].”

    Formation:
    Noun + は + Place + に + あります
    Key Point:

    あります is the マス-form of ある, used for inanimate objects.

    は marks the object as the topic; に indicates the location.

    Use ここ (here), そこ (there near you), or あそこ (over there) based on position:

    ① ここ – near the speaker

    ② そこ – near the listener

    ③ あそこ – away from both

    You can also use ~です as a simpler way of saying ~に あります.

    To ask location: use ~は どこに ありますか? or ~は どこ ですか?

    Example
    A :
    すみません。のり、ありますか?。 Excuse me. Is there any glue?
    B:
    ここに あります。 It’s right here.

    A:
    コピー 機[き]は、どこに ありますか? Where is the photocopier?
    B:
    あそこです。 It’s over there.

    ■ Nの【location】に あります

    Meaning: “[Something] is at [location] of N.”

    Formation:
    Noun + の + Location word + に + あります
    Key Point:

    Used to describe the specific position of an object relative to another.

    Common location words:

    ・上(うえ) = above/on

    ・中(なか) = in/inside

    ・下(した) = under/below

    ・横(よこ) = beside

    の links the reference object and the location.

    に あります expresses the presence of an object at that location.

    Example
    A:
    FAX は、どこに ありますか。 Where is the fax machine?
    B:
    あそこです。コピー機[き]の 横[よ]こです。 It’s over there. It’s beside the photocopier.

    A:
    ご み箱[ばこ]、ありますか。 Is there a garbage can?
    B:
    そこです。 机[つくえ]の 下[した]に あります。 It’s there. It’s under the desk.
