    Japanese Grammar – Requests, Confirmation & Borrowing

    ■ V-て ください

    Meaning: “Please do V.” (polite request)

    Formation:
    Verb (テ-form) + ください
    Key Point:

    Polite and formal request.

    ■ V-て

    Meaning: “[Do] V.” (casual instruction/request)

    Formation:
    Verb (テ-form)
    Key Point:

    Casual version of ~てください.

    Used with friends, family, or subordinates.

    ■ V- くれる?

    Meaning: “Can you do V for me?” (casual request)

    Formation:
    Verb (テ-form) + くれる?
    Key Point:

    Casual and friendly way to ask for help.

    Spoken with rising intonation.

    Used with people close to you or in informal situations.

    Example
    A:
    ここに 、 名前[なまえ]と 電話[でんわ]番号[ばんごう]を 書[か]いてください。 Please write your name and phone number here.
    B:
    はい、わかりました。 Sure.

    A:
    ちょっと、待[ま]って。 Wait a minute.
    B:
    はい。 OK.

    A:
    すみません。塩[しお]、取[と]ってくれる? Excuse me. Could you pass the salt?
    B:
    どうぞ。 Here you are.

    ■ Nですね(Confirmation)

    Meaning: “N, right?” / “Let me confirm: N.”

    Formation:
    Noun + ですね
    Key Point:

    Used to confirm information or instructions with the other person.

    The particle ね adds a sense of confirmation or agreement.

    When unsure, ask again using interrogatives like いくつ (how many) or なんじ (what time).

    Example
    A:
    これ、今日[きょう]の 午後[ごご] 5時[じ]までに お願[ねが]いします。 Please do this by 5 pm today.
    B:
    はい、5時[じ]ですね。 OK, by 5.

    A:
    会議[かいぎ]は、1時[じ]からです。 The meeting is from 1.
    B:
    すみません。何時[なんじ]ですか? Excuse me. What time?
    A:
    1時[じ]。13時[じ]です。 At 1. 13:00.

    ■ N、貸[か]して ください

    Meaning: “Please lend me N.”

    Formation:
    Noun、 + 貸[か]してください
    Key Point:

    Polite request using the テ-form of 貸[か]す (to lend) + ください.

    ■ N、借[か]りても いいですか?

    Meaning: “May I borrow N?”

    Formation:
    Noun + 借[か]りても いいですか?
    Key Point:

    Polite way to ask permission using the テ-form of 借[か]りる (to borrow) + も いいですか.

    ■ N、いいですか?

    Meaning: “Is it okay (if I use/borrow N)?”

    Formation:
    Noun、 + いいですか?
    Key Point:

    Abbreviated form of 借[か]りても いいですか?

    Used casually when the item is visible or obvious from context.

    ■ N、ありますか?

    Meaning: “Do you have N?” / “Is there N?”

    Used to ask if someone has the item.

    Often used before asking to borrow something.
