    Japanese Grammar – Location, Position & Impressions

    ■ 【Place】に　N（は）ありますか？

    Meaning: “Is there N at [place]?”

    Formation:
    Place ＋ に ＋ Noun（＋ は）＋ ありますか？
    Key Point:

    Used to ask whether something exists in a specific place.

    Commonly used with この近[ちか]くに (near here), 駅[えき]の前[まえ]に (in front of the station), etc.

    あります is used for inanimate objects and places.

    To ask more specifically where something is, use:

    ・～は どこに ありますか？

    ・～は どこ ですか？

    Example ①
    Ａ：
    すみません。この近[ちか]くに、ATMは　ありますか？ Excuse me. Is there an ATM near here?
    Ｂ：
    ええ、この先[さき]に　ありますよ。 Yes, there’s one just ahead.
    Example ②
    Ａ：
    あのう、自動[じどう]販売[はんばい]機[き]は、どこに　ありますか？ Excuse me, where are the vending machines?
    Ｂ：
    あっちです。 They are over there.
    Example ③
    Ａ：
    あのう、トイレは、どこですか？ Excuse me, where is the toilet?
    Ｂ：
    この奥[おく]です。 It’s in the back.

    ■ Nの【location】に　います

    Meaning: “[Someone] is at [specific position] of N.”

    Formation:
    Noun ＋ の ＋ Location word ＋ に ＋ います
    Key Point:

    Used to describe a person’s exact position relative to a place or landmark.

    Common location words include:

    ・前[まえ] – in front　・横[よこ] – beside　・中[なか] – inside　・後[うし]ろ – behind

    Can also say ～です instead of ～に います for casual or simple responses.

    Example
    Ａ：
    今[いま]、どこに　いますか？ Where are you?
    Ｂ：
    コンビニの　中[なか]に　います。 Inside the convenience store.
    Ａ：
    あのう、今[いま]、どこですか？ Umm, where are you?
    Ｂ：
    インフォメーションの　前[まえ]です。 In front of the information counter.

    ■ ナA-な N ／ イA-い N ＋ ですね

    Meaning: “[What a] [adjective] [noun], isn’t it?” (Expressing impression)

    Formation:

    ナ-adjective な ＋ Noun ＋ ですね

    イ-adjective い ＋ Noun ＋ ですね

    Key Point:

    Used to express your impression or reaction to what you see.

    ナ-adjectives require な before a noun.

    イ-adjectives directly modify the noun with the い ending.

    大[おお]きい／大[おお]きな and 小[ちい]さい／小[ちい]さな are special cases — both forms are used.

    Example
    Ａ：
    ここは、中央[ちゅうおう]公園[こうえん]です。 This is Chuuoo Park.
    Ｂ：
    わあ、きれいな　公園[こうえん]ですね。 Wow, it’s a beautiful park.
    Ａ：
    あそこに、古[ふる]い　建物[たてもの]が　ありますね。何[なん]ですか？ There’s an old building over there. What is it?
    Ｂ：
    銀行[ぎんこう]です。 A bank.
