    Japanese Grammar – Book 2 Lesson 6

    ■ N に 行[い]きたいんですが…

    Meaning: “I’d like to go to N, but… / I want to go to N (and I need help)…”

    Formation:
    Noun + に + 行[い]きたい + んですが…
    Key Point:

    ~んですが… is used to explain your situation softly, often before asking for help or directions.

    Expresses a desire (行[い]きたい) followed by a polite lead-in to a request.

    Usually spoken with a soft tone and falling intonation to keep the mood polite and humble.

    Example
    駅[えき]は どこですか? Where is the station?

    駅[えき]は、どう 行[い]ったら いいですか? How do I get to the station?

    駅[えき]に 行[い]きたいんですが…。 I would like to go to the station.

    ■ V-て、~(directions)

    Meaning: “Do V1, and then do V2 (used in giving directions)”

    Formation:
    Verb 1 (テ-form) +、Verb 2(e.g., ~てください)
    Key Point:

    The テ-form is used to connect sequential actions when giving directions.

    Often ends with ~てください to give polite instructions.

    Example
    マルイチデパートは、あの信号[しんごう]を 右[みぎ]に 曲[まが]って、そのあと、ずっと まっすぐですよ。 To get to the Maruichi Department Store, turn right at the light and go straight without turning.

    科学[かがく]博物館[はくぶつかん]は、ここを まっすぐ 行[い]って、橋[はし]を 渡[わた]って、すぐ 右[みぎ]に 曲[まが]った ところに あります。 To get to the Science Museum, go straight on this road. Cross the bridge and take an immediate right.

    A:
    家[いえ]は どの辺[へん]ですか? Where is your house?
    B:
    小島[こじま]高校[こうこう]の 近[ちか]くです。 It is near Kojima High School.
    A:
    もうすぐ 小島[こじま]高校[こうこう]だけど…。 We are getting close to Kojima High School.
    B:
    この先[さき]に、白[しろ]くて 大[おお]きな 家[いえ]が あります。その角[かど]を 右[みぎ]に 入[はい]ってください。 There is a large white house ahead. Please turn right at the corner.

    ■ N1 じゃなくて、N2

    Meaning: “Not N1, but N2”

    Formation:
    Noun 1 + じゃなくて、+ Noun 2
    Key Point:

    Used to correct or clarify information.

    Denies N1 and affirms N2.

    じゃなくて is the conjunctive form of じゃない.

    Common in spoken Japanese when adjusting or confirming facts.

    Example
    A:
    すみません。 博物館[はくぶつかん]は どこですか? Excuse me. Where is the museum?
    B:
    博物館[はくぶつかん]? 市立[しりつ]博物館[はくぶつかん]ですか? Museum? Is it the municipal museum?
    A:
    いいえ、市立[しりつ]博物館[はくぶつかん]じゃなくて、科学[かがく]博物館[はくぶつかん]です。 No, it is not the municipal museum. It is the Science Museum.
