    Japanese Grammar – Book 2 Lesson 7

    ■ Nは どうですか?

    Meaning: “How about N?”

    Formation:
    Noun + は + どう ですか?
    Key Point:

    Used to suggest a time, place, or option to someone.

    Asks for the listener’s opinion or agreement.

    Commonly used when making plans or arranging meetings.

    Example
    A:
    明日[あした]の 待[ま]ち合[あ]わせ、どうしますか? Where would you like to meet tomorrow?
    B:
    ホテルの ロビーは どうですか? How about we meet at a hotel lobby?
    A:
    わかりました。ロビーですね。 Sure. I will see you at the lobby.

    ■ Nでも いいですか?

    Meaning: “Is N also okay? / Is N acceptable (as an alternative)?”

    Formation:
    Noun + でも + いいですか?
    Key Point:

    Used to suggest an alternative and check if it’s acceptable.

    Softens a request or proposal by showing flexibility.

    Example
    A:
    明日[あした]の 待[ま]ち合[あ]わせ、「平和[へいわ]の鳥[とり]」の 像[ぞう]の前[まえ]は どうですか? How about we meet in front of the Heiwa-no-tori statue tomorrow?
    B:
    ちょっと わかりません。 駅[えき]の 改札[かいさつ]でも いいですか? I am not quite sure. Can we meet at the ticket gate of the station?
    A:
    いいですよ。 For sure.

    ■ Nで、~ / V-て、~(Cause・Reason)

    Meaning: “Because of N / V, ~”

    Formation:

    Noun + で、~

    Verb (テ-form) +、~

    Key Point:

    Used to indicate a cause or reason for the following action or result.

    Example
    渋滞[じゅうたい]で、30分[ぷん]ぐらい 遅[おく]れます。 I will be late about 30 minutes because of traffic congestion.

    道[みち]に 迷[まよ]って、ちょっと 遅[おく]れます。 I will be a bit late because I got lost.
