    Japanese Grammar – Book 2 Lesson 10

    ■ V-て みたいんですが…

Meaning: I’d like to try doing V (and I want to ask about it)…

    Formation:
    Verb (テ-form) + みたい + んですが…
    Key Point:

Used to express a desire to try something for the first time.

Often followed by a question, request for advice, or invitation for help.

Built on the expression V-てみたい (“want to try doing V”) plus んですが, which softens the statement and opens the conversation

    Example
    A:
書道[しょどう]教室[きょうしつ]に 参加[さんか]してみたいんですが…。 I would like to take a calligraphy class.
    B:
体験[たいけん]教室[きょうしつ]ですか? それとも 毎週[まいしゅう]の コースですか? Do you mean a trial lesson or a weekly course?

    ■ 【Duration】(に)~回[かい]

Meaning: ~ times per [duration]” / “~ times in [a duration]

    Formation:

    【Duration】+ に + [Number] 回[かい]

    (e.g., 週[しゅう]に 2回[かい], 月[つき]に 3回[かい])

    Key Point:

Used to express frequency over a set period.

The particle に follows a duration (e.g., 週[しゅう], 月[つき], 年[ねん]) and indicates how many times something occurs.

回[かい] is the counter for number of times.

You can add ぐらい after 回[かい] to give an approximate number (e.g., 週[しゅう]に 2回[かい]ぐらい).

に is sometimes omitted in casual conversation.

    Example
月[つき]に 2回[かい]、国際[こくさい]交流会[こうりゅうかい]が あります。 International exchange events are held twice per month.

オリンピックは 4年[ねん]に 1回[かい] あります。 The Olympic Games are held once every four years.

    ■ V-ましょうか?

Meaning: Shall I do V?” / “Would you like me to do V?

    Formation:
    Vます+ ましょうか?
    Key Point:

Used to offer help or assistance to someone politely.

Often used in situations where you see someone may need support or when you want to do something for the listener.

Similar to “Shall I…?” or “Do you want me to…?” in English.

Built from the volitional form of the verb (V-ましょう) with a question particle か to indicate an offer.

    Example
    A:
よかったら 、 手伝[てつだ]いましょうか? I will help you if you’d like.
    B:
    ありがとうございます。 Thank you.

①~は どういう 意味[いみ]ですか? is used to ask for the meaning of a word.

③Just repeating the word with rising intonation can also be used in casual conversations to ask again
