    Japanese Grammar – Book 3 Lesson 19

    ■ Causative Form

Meaning: “To make someone do something” (Force/Compulsion) or “To let someone do something” (Permission/Allowance).”

    Formation:

Group 1 (U-verbs): Change the last vowel -u to -a and add せる.

    e.g., 書[か]く kaku → 書[か]かせる kakaせる / 行[い]く Iku → 行[い]かせる Ikaせる

Group 2 (Ru-verbs): Remove る and add させる.

    e.g., 食[た]べる → 食[た]べさせる / 見[み]る → 見[み]させる

    Group 3 (Irregular):

    する → させる

    来[く]る → 来[こ]させる

    Key Point:

This form is used when a person in a higher position (parent, boss, teacher) controls the action of someone in a lower position.

    1. Force / Compulsion: Making someone do something regardless of their will.

    2. Permission / Allowance: Letting someone do what they want to do.

    Particles:

The particle for the “doer” (the person being made/let to do the action) depends on the type of verb:

    Transitive Verbs (V-を): [Person] に [Object] を V-させます。

    Intransitive Verbs: [Person] を [Place] に/へ V-させます。

    Example

    ① Force / Compulsion

    Example (Transitive):

お母[かあ]さんは 子供[こども]に 皿[さら]を 洗[あら]わせます。 The mother makes her child wash the dishes.

    Example (Intransitive):

先生[せんせい]は 学生[がくせい]を 走[はし]らせました。 The teacher made the students run.

    ② Permission / Allowance

    Example (Transitive):

お父[とう]さんは 子供[こども]に テレビを 見[み]させます。 The father lets his child watch TV.

    Example (Intransitive):

母[はは]は 弟[おとうと]を プールに 行[い]かせました。 My mother let my younger brother go to the pool.

    ■ 〜させていただけませんか?

Meaning: “Would you kindly allow me to do…?” / “Could I please have your permission to…?”

    Formation:

    Verb (Causative form せる/させる) → remove る + ていただけませんか?

    Group 1:

    話[はな]す → 話[はな]させる(Causative form)

    話[はな]させる + いただけませんか? → 話[はな]させていただけませんか?

    Group 2:

    見[み]る → 見[み]させる(Causative form)

    見[み]させる + ていただけませんか? → 見[み]させていただけませんか?

    Group 3:

    する → させる(Causative form)

    させる + + ていただけませんか? → させていただけませんか?

    来[く]る → 来[こ]させる(Causative form)

    来[こ]させる + ていただけませんか? → 来[こ]させていただけませんか?

    Key Point:

This is an extremely polite and formal way to ask for permission using Keigo (honorific language).

It is much more formal than 「〜てもいいですか?」 or 「〜てもいいでしょうか?」.

Commonly used in business settings, meetings, or when speaking to superiors (like a CEO or professor) to show deep respect.

    Example
すみません、私[わたし]に 話[はな]させていただけませんか? Excuse me, would you kindly allow me to speak?

明日[あした]は 用事[ようじ]が あるので、休[やす]ませていただけませんか? Since I have some business to attend to tomorrow, could I please be allowed to take the day off?

この 資料[しりょう]を コピーさせていただけませんか? Would you mind if I made a copy of these documents?
