    Japanese Grammar – Book 2 Lesson 4

    ■ S ね(Sympathy)

    Meaning: “Isn’t it? / Right?” (sharing or seeking sympathy)

    Formation:
    Statement + ね
    Key Point:

    ね is used to express or seek sympathy, agreement, or shared feeling.

    Signals that the speaker assumes the listener feels the same way.

    Example
    A:
    今日[きょう]は いい 天気[てんき]ですね。 It is a beautiful day today.
    B:
    そうですね。 Yes, it is.

    A:
    だいぶ 暖[あたた]かく なりましたね。 It got much warmer.
    B:
    本当[ほんとう]ですね。 That’s true.

    ■ Non-past / Past

    Meaning: “Present, Future tense / Past tense”

    Formation:

    Non-past:

    Vます

    Adjective / Noun + です

    Past:

    Vました

    Adjective / Noun + でした

    Key Point:

    Use the non-past form to talk about the current situation (e.g., today’s weather).

    Use the past form when referring to previous events, such as yesterday’s weather or what happened before.

    Example
    A:
    おはようございます。 朝[あさ]から 暑[あつ]いですね。 Good morning. It is a hot morning.
    B:
    そうですね。ゆうべも 暑[あつ]かったですね。 Yes, it is. It was hot last night, too.

    A:
    毎日[まいにち]、よく 降[ふ]りますね。 It rains a lot every day.
    B:
    本当[ほんとう]ですね。 That’s true.

    ■ V-て います ③

    Meaning: “It is currently V-ing (ongoing state or weather)”

    Formation:
    Verb (テ-form) + います
    Key Point:

    Used to describe ongoing actions or states.

    Describes what is happening right now (e.g., raining, snowing, being cloudy).

    Same form as used in occupations (Book 2 – Lesson 1), but applied here to natural phenomena.

    Useful expressions to memorize:

    晴[は]れています(It is sunny)/くもっています(It is cloudy)/雨[あめ]が 降[ふ]っています(It is raining

    Example
    今朝[けさ]は、よく 晴[は]れていますね。 It is nice and sunny this morning.

    外[そと]は、風[かぜ]が 吹[ふ]いています。注意[ちゅうい]してください。 It is windy outside. Please be careful.

    今日[きょう]は くもっていて、あまり 天気[てんき]が よくないですね。 It is cloudy and not very fine today.

    ■ N/ナA/イA/V-る + でしょう

    Meaning: “Will probably / It will likely…”

    Formation:

    Noun + でしょう

    ナ-adjectiveな + でしょう

    イ-adjectiveい + でしょう

    Verb (dictionary form) + でしょう

    Key Point:

    でしょう is used to express a prediction, especially in weather forecasts.

    Common in formal or forecast-related contexts, but not frequently used in daily conversation.

    Example
    明日[あした]は 晴[は]れでしょう。 It will be sunny tomorrow.

    明日[あした]も 寒[さむ]いでしょう。 It will be cold again tomorrow.

    雨[あめ]は、今日[きょう]の 夕方[ゆうがた]には やむでしょう。 The rain will stop in the early evening today.
