    Japanese Grammar – Events, Invitations & Purpose

    ■ 【Date and time】に 【Event】が あります

    Meaning: “There is an event on [date/time].”

    Formation:
    Date/Time + に + Event + が + あります
    Key Point:

    に indicates the time something happens.

    Not used with words like 明日[あした], 今晩[こんばん], 来週[らいしゅう].

    ■ 【Place】で 【Event】が あります

    Meaning: “There is an event at [place].”

    Formation:
    Place + で + Event + が + あります
    Key Point:

    で indicates the location of the event.

    Used when describing where something takes place.

    Example
    12 月[がつ] 20日[はつか]に、会社[かいしゃ]で 忘年会[ぼうねんかい]が あります。 There is a year-end party at the office on December 20th.

    毎朝[まいあさ]、7時[じ]に 朝礼[ちょうれい]が あります。 Morning assemblies are at 7 every morning.

    A:
    明日[あした]、夏[なつ]祭[まつ]りが ありますね。 There’s a summer festival tomorrow.
    B:
    そうですか。どこで ありますか? Is that so? Where is it?
    A:
    中央[ちゅうおう]公園[こうえん]です。 At Chuuoo Park.

    ■ N に 行[い]きます

    Meaning: “Go to (for) N” / “Go to [do something]”

    Formation:
    Noun (event or activity) + に + 行[い]きます
    Key Point:

    に indicates the purpose of going somewhere.

    Used with action or event nouns such as パーティー, 映画[えいが], 買[か]い物[もの], 試合[しあい], etc.

    The verb 行[い]きます shows movement toward the activity.

    Example
    毎朝[まいあさ]、散歩[さんぽ]に 行[い]きます。 I go for a walk every morning.

    あさって、友[とも]だちと 映画[えいが]に 行[い]きます。 I’m going to go to a movie with my friends the day after tomorrow.

    A:
    田中[たなか]さんの サッカーの 試合[しあい]に 行[い]きますか? Are you going to Tanaka-san’s soccer game?
    B:
    もちろんです。 Of course.

    ■ V-ませんか?

    Meaning: “Shall we do V?”

    Formation:
    Vます + ませんか?
    Key Point:

    Used to invite someone to do something together.

    Polite and commonly used for suggestions.

    Example
    A:
    これから 、 昼[ひる]ご飯[はん]に 行[い]きます。いっしょに 行[い]きませんか? I’m going to go and have lunch. Do you want to go together?
    B:
    いいですね 。 That sounds good.

    A:
    日曜日[にちようび]、いっしょに 買[か]い物[もの]に 行[い]きませんか? Do you want to go shopping together on Sunday?
    B:
    すみません。 日曜日[にちようび]は ちょっと…。 Sorry. Sunday is not good for me.
    A:
    そうですか。じゃあ、また 今度[こんど]。 I see. OK, let’s go another time.

    ■ V-ましょう

    Meaning: “Let’s do V.”

    Formation:
    Vます + ましょう
    Key Point:

    Used to suggest doing something together.

    Also used to encourage or prompt action.

    Example ①
    A:
    今度[こんど]、みんなで、ハイキングに 行[い]きませんか? Would you like to go hiking with everyone next time?
    B:
    いいですね 。 行[い]きましょう。 That sounds good. Let’s go.
    Example ②
    A:
    明日[あした]、みんなで、ご飯[はん]に 行[い]きませんか? Would you like to go to eat something with everyone tomorrow?
    B:
    明日[あした]は ちょっと…。 Sorry, tomorrow is not good for me.
    A:
    そうですか。じゃあ、また 今度[こんど] 行[い]きましょう。 I see. Let’s do it another time.

    ■ V-に 行[い]きます

    Meaning: “Go to do V” / “Go for [verb action]”

    Formation:
    Vます+ に + 行[い]きます
    Key Point:

    Indicates the purpose of going somewhere using a verb.

    Used with 行[い]きませんか? to make invitations: “Would you like to go and [do]?”

    Example
    A:
    金曜日[きんようび]の 夜[よる]、ジャズを 聞[き]きに 行[い]きませんか? Do you want to go and hear some jazz on Friday night?
    B:
    いいですね 。 That sounds good.

    A:
    今晩[こんばん]、飲[の]みに 行[い]きませんか? Do you want to go for a drink tonight?
    B:
    すみません。 今晩[こんばん]は だめです。 Sorry. Tonight is not good.
