    Japanese Grammar – Ordering & Requests

    ■ N、お願[ねが]いします

    Meaning: “N, please.” (polite request)

    Formation:
    Noun + お願[ねが]いします
    Key Point:

    Used to politely request or order something.

    More polite than ください.

    Implies asking someone to do something for you.

    ■ N、ください

    Meaning: “Please give me N.”

    Formation:
    Noun + ください
    Key Point:

    Used to request or order something directly.

    Slightly less formal than お願[ねが]いします.

    Often used when pointing at or selecting something.

    Example
    店員[てんいん]:
    ご注文[ちゅうもん]は?
    Staff:
    What is your order?
    客[きゃく]:
    ハンバーガーと コーラ、ください。
    Customer:
    I'd like a hamburger and a cola, please.


    客[きゃく]:
    コーヒー、お願[ねが]いします。 I'll have coffee, please.
    店員[てんいん]:
    ホットですか? アイスですか? Is that hot coffee or iced coffee?
    客[きゃく]:
    アイス、お願[ねが]いします。 Iced, please.
    店員[てんいん]:
    サイズは? What size?
    客[きゃく]:
    L[エル]、お願[ねが]いします。 Large, please.

    ■ Nに します

    Meaning: “I'll have N.” / “I'll choose N.” (expresses a decision)

    Formation:
    Noun + に + します
    Key Point:

    します is the マス-form of する (to do).

    にします shows that a decision or choice has been made.

    Use 何[なに]に しますか? to ask what someone will choose or order.

    Example
    A:
    何[なに]に しますか? What will you have?
    B:
    私[わたし]は、カレーに します。 I'll have curry.
    A:
    飲[の]み物[もの]は? And to drink?
    B:
    アイスコーヒーに します。 I'll have iced coffee.

    ■ N、【number】お願[ねが]いします/ください

    Meaning: “___ (quantity) of N, please.” (used when ordering)

    Formation:

    Noun + 【native Japanese number】 + お願[ねが]いします

    Noun + 【native Japanese number】 + ください

    Key Point:

    Use native Japanese counters like ひとつ、ふたつ、みっつ, etc., for counting general items (e.g., food and drinks).

    Place the number after the noun.

    Use お願[ねが]いします for polite requests, and ください for more direct ones.

    Example
    客[きゃく]:
    すみません。コーヒー 4[よっ]つ、ください。
    Customer:
    Excuse me. We'd like four coffees, please.
    店員[てんいん]:
    ホットに しますか? アイスに しますか?
    Staff:
    Would you like hot coffee or iced coffee?


    客[きゃく]:
    ホットコーヒー 3[みっ]つ、アイスコーヒー 1[ひと]つ、お願[ねが]いします。 We'll have three hot coffees and one iced coffee, please.

    ■ N(は)ありますか?

    Meaning: “Do you have N?” / “Is there N?”

    Formation:
    Noun + は + ありますか?
    Key Point:

    あります is the マス-form of ある (to exist; to have).

    Used to ask whether something exists or is available.

    The particle は marks the item as the topic, but it can be omitted in conversation.

    Example
    客[きゃく]:
    すみません。
    Customer:
    Excuse me.
    店員[てんいん]:
    はい。
    Staff :
    Yes.


    客[きゃく]:
    取[と]り皿[ざら]、ありますか? Do you have any small dishes?
    店員[てんいん]:
    はい、お持[も]ちします。 Yes, I'll bring some.
