    Japanese Grammar – Book 2 Lesson 16

    ■ V-ると いいです(よ)

    Meaning: “You should ~” / “It’s good to ~”

    Formation:
    Verb (dictionary form) + と いいです(よ)
    Key Point:

    Used to give casual advice or suggestions.

    と indicates condition or situation; いいです expresses a positive result or benefit.

    よ adds a gentle, encouraging tone to the suggestion.

    Example
    A : よく 眠[ねむ]れないときは、どうすれば いいですか? What should I do if I cannot sleep well?
    B : 静[しず]かな 音楽[おんがく]を 聞[き]くと いいですよ。 Listening to quiet music will be helpful.

    ■ V-すぎます

    Meaning: “Do something too much” / “Overdo something”

    Formation:
    Vます + すぎます
    Key Point:

    Used to express that an action is done excessively.

    Often carries a negative nuance, such as causing problems or being unhealthy.

    Common patterns:

    食[た]べすぎます (eat too much),

    飲[の]みすぎます (drink too much),

    働[はたら]きすぎます (work too much)

    Example
    食[た]べすぎて、お腹[なか]が 痛[いた]いです。 I ate too much, and my stomach hurts.

    スマホの 画面[がめん]を 見[み]すぎて、目[め]が 痛[いた]くなりました。 I looked at the smartphone screen too much, and my eyes hurt.

    ■ V1-たり、V2-たり(します)

    Meaning: “Do things like V1 and V2” / “Sometimes V1, sometimes V2”

    Formation:
    Verb (タ-form) + り、Verb (タ-form) + り + します
    Key Point:

    Used to list representative actions or experiences.

    Indicates that there are several possible actions, not just the ones listed.

    Example
    A : 健康[けんこう]のために、何[なに]か 気[き]を つけていますか? Is there anything you do for your health?
    B : ジムに 行[い]ったり、ウォーキングを したりしています。 I go to the gym and go for a walk.

    休[やす]みは、テレビを 見[み]たり、音楽[おんがく]を 聞[き]いたりして、ゆっくり 過[す]ごします。 I watch TV and listen to music to relax on my day off.

    ■ V-るように しています ■ V-ないように しています

    Meaning: “I try to do…” / “I try not to do…”

    Formation:

    Verb (dictionary-form) + ように しています

    Verb (ナイ-form) + ように しています

    Key Point:

    Used to express efforts to build a habit or paying attention to something regularly.

    Dictionary-form: used for actions you’re trying to do.

    ナイ-form: used for actions you’re trying to avoid.

    Often used for health habits, self-discipline, or personal rules.

    Example
    A : 健康[けんこう]のために、何[なに]か 気[き]をつけていますか? Is there anything you do for your health?
    B : 私[わたし]は、できるだけ、早[はや]く 寝[ね]るように しています。 I try to go to bed as early as possible.
    C : 私[わたし]は、ストレスを ためないように しています。 I try not to accumulate stress.
