    Japanese Grammar – Book 3 Lesson 17

    ■ V-(られ)るように なりました

    Meaning: “I have become able to [verb].”

    Formation:

    V (potential-form) + ように なりました

    How to form potential-form (review)

    Group 1 (u-verbs): Change the final “u” to the “e” + ます

    (e.g., 飲[の]む → 飲[の]めます)

    Group 2 (る-verbs): V-る + られます

    (e.g., 食[た]べる → 食[た]べられます)

    Group 3 (Irregular verbs):

    する → できます

    来[こ]られる → 来[こ]られます

    Example: わかるように なりました (I have become able to understand) or できるように なりました (I have become able to do).

    Key Point:

    This expression indicates that a change has occurred, and now the person is able to perform an action that was previously not possible.

    It can be used with potential verbs or in general to describe an improvement or acquisition of a new skill or ability.

    Examples:

    日本語[にほんご]が 少[すこ]し わかるように なりました。 (I have become able to understand Japanese a little). 仕事[しごと]が 早[はや]く できるように なりました。 (I have become able to do my job quicker).

    日本語[にほんご]は どうですか? How is your Japanese coming along?
    B:
    前[まえ]よりも、たくさん 話[はな]せるように なりました。 I can speak more Japanese than before.
