    Japanese Grammar – Book 3 Lesson 3

    ■ S1 ので、S2

    Meaning: “Because S1, S2.” / “S2 happens due to S1.”

    Formation:

    Verb(plain form) + ので

    イ-adjectiveい + ので

    ナ-adjectiveな + ので

    noun + な + ので

    Key Point:

    ので is a conjunction used to express a reason or cause for something in a polite and soft way.

    Often used when declining invitations, giving personal reasons, or explaining situations politely.

    Can be used with both plain and polite forms, but in this lesson, focus is on the plain form.

    Example
    ベジタリアンなので、肉[にく]とか 魚[さかな]は だめなんです。 Because I am a vegetarian, I do not eat meat or fish.

    この店[みせ]は 有名[ゆうめい]なので、いつも 混[こ]んでいます。 Because this restaurant is popular, it is always crowded.

    ここは 安[やす]いので、よく 来[き]ます。 I come here often because it is inexpensive.

    ■ S よね

    Meaning: S, right?” / “S, doesn’t it?

    Formation:

    Statement (any form) + よね

    ね adds confirmation or seeking agreement.

    Combined, よね checks that the listener agrees with your assumption or shared knowledge.

    Use よね when:

    You are quite sure about something but want to confirm it.

    You and the listener share the same context or knowledge.

    Key Point:

    よね is a sentence-ending expression used to confirm something you believe to be true with the other person.

    よ adds assertion (you are providing information).

    ね adds confirmation or seeking agreement.

    Combined, よね checks that the listener agrees with your assumption or shared knowledge.


    Use よね when:

    You are quite sure about something but want to confirm it.

    You and the listener share the same context or knowledge.

    Example
    A:
    定食[ていしょく]の ご飯[はん]は、おかわり できますよね。 I can get free refills of rice for the set meal, right?
    B:
    はい、できますよ。 Yes, you can.

    ■ Nで ~

    Meaning: “I’ll go with N.” / “N is fine.”

    Formation:
    Noun + で
    Key Point:

    Used to express your preference or choice from options offered, especially in service situations like at restaurants or stores.

    Example
    A:
    ご飯[はん]の 量[りょう]、大盛[おおも]もりに しますか? Would you like an extra-large portion of rice?
    B:
    普通[ふつう]で だいじょうぶです。 I am fine with a normal portion.

    A:
    ミックスフライ定食[ていしょく]が おすすめです。 The set meal with assorted fried food is recommended.
    B:
    じゃあ、それで。 Okay. I will take it.

    ■ ナA-な のは、Nです

    ■ イA- のは、Nです

    ■ V-る のは、Nです

    Meaning: “What is (A/V) is N.” / “The one that (A/V) is N.”

    Formation:

    ナ-adjectiveな + のは + Noun + です

    イ-adjectiveい + のは + Noun + です

    Verb (dictionary form) + のは + Noun + です

    Key Point:

    This pattern highlights or identifies N based on a condition or action stated before のは.

    The part before のは explains the condition or feature, and the part after のは tells what it is.

    Example
    A:
    何[なに]が おいしいですか? What is delicious here?
    B:
    この店[みせ]で おいしいのは、親子丼[おやこどん]ですよ。 This restaurant has tasty oyako-don (rice bowl with chicken and eggs).

    よく みんなが 注文[ちゅうもん]するのは、ミックスフライ定食[ていしょく]です。 Many people orders the set meal with assorted fried food.
