    Japanese Grammar – Past Tense

    ■ V-ました

    Meaning: “[Someone] did V.” (past tense, affirmative)

    Formation:
    Vます + ました
    Key Point:

    Used to express completed actions in the past.

    Polite past tense of verbs.

    ■ V-ませんでした

    Meaning: “[Someone] did not do V.” (past tense, negative)

    Formation:
    Vます + ませんでした
    Key Point:

    Polite negative past tense of verbs.

    Example
    土日[どにち]は、ジムで 運動[うんどう]しました。 I exercised at the gym on Saturday and Sunday.

    A:
    週末[しゅうまつ]は、何[なに]を しましたか? What did you do on the weekend?
    B:
    家[いえ]で テレビを 見[み]ました。 I watched TV at home.

    ■ なにも V-ませんでした

    Meaning: “Did not do anything”

    Formation:
    なにも + Vませんでした
    Key Point:

    なにも means “nothing” when used with negative verbs.

    Emphasizes that no action was taken.

    ■ どこにも V-ませんでした

    Meaning: “Did not go anywhere”

    Formation:
    どこにも + Vませんでした
    Key Point:

    どこにも means “nowhere” when used with negative verbs.

    Used to express complete absence of movement or location.

    Example
    A:
    休[やす]みは、何[なに]を しましたか? Did you do anything on your day off?
    B:
    何[なに]も しませんでした。家[いえ]で ゆっくりしました。 I did nothing. I relaxed at home.

    A:
    連休[れんきゅう]は、どこに 行[い]きましたか? Did you go anywhere on the long weekend?
    B:
    どこにも 行[い]きませんでした。家[いえ]で 本[ほん]を 読[よ]みました。 I didn’t go anywhere. I read a book at home.

    ■ ナA-でした

    Meaning: “[It] was (ナ-adjective).”

    Formation:
    ナ-adjective な + でした
    Key Point:

    Past tense of ナ-adjectives.

    Used to describe impressions or conditions in the past.

    ■ イA-かったです

    Meaning: “[It] was (イ-adjective).”

    Formation:
    イ-adjective い + かったです
    Key Point:

    Past tense of イ-adjectives.

    いい (good) becomes よかったです in the past tense.

    To ask for someone’s impression, use: どうでしたか? (“How was it?”)

    Example
    A:
    テストは どうでしたか? How was the test?
    B:
    とても 大変[たいへん]でした。 It was very hard.

    A:
    休[やす]みは、どうでしたか? How was your day off?
    B:
    ハイキングに 行[い]きました。とても、よかったです。 I went hiking. It was great.

    A:
    週末[しゅうまつ]は、何[なに]を しましたか? What did you do on the weekend?
    B:
    友[とも]だちと 映画[えいが]に 行[い]きました。 I saw a movie with my friends.
    A:
    映画[えいが]は、おもしろかったですか? Was the movie any good?
    B:
    いえ、いまいちでした。 No, not really.

    ■ Nでした

    Meaning: “[It] was N.” (past tense noun sentence)

    Formation:
    Noun + でした
    Key Point:

    Past tense of a noun sentence.

    Change ~です to ~でした to describe something that existed or happened in the past.

    Example
    昨日[きのう]は、父[ちち]の 誕生日[たんじょうび]でした。みんなで、ケーキを 食[た]べました。 Yesterday was my father’s birthday. We ate cake with everyone.

    カラオケに 行[い]きました。でも、店[みせ]は 休[やす]みでした。 I went to karaoke. However, it was closed.

    A:
    天気[てんき]は どうでしたか? How was the weather?
    B:
    雨[あめ]でした。 It rained.

    ■ N/ナA + じゃなかったです

    Meaning: “[It] was not N / [It] was not (ナ-adjective).”

    Formation:

    Noun + じゃなかったです

    ナ-adjective な + じゃなかったです

    Key Point:

    Past negative form of noun or ナ-adjective sentences.

    Used to express what something was not in the past.

    Formal alternative: ~じゃ ありませんでした

    ■ イA + くなかったです

    Meaning: “[It] was not (イ-adjective).”

    Formation:
    イ-adjective い + くなかったです
    Key Point:

    Past negative form of イ-adjective sentences.

    Formal alternative: ~く ありませんでした

    Example ①
    温泉[おんせん]に 入[はい]りました。でも、露天[ろてん]風呂[ぶろ]じゃなかったです。 I went to a hot spring. However, it wasn’t an open-air bath.
    Example ②
    A:
    富士山[ふじさん]に 登[のぼ]りました。 I climbed Mt. Fuji.
    B:
    すごいですね。大変[たいへん]でしたか? Wow. Was it tough?
    A:
    いえ、あまり 大変[たいへん]じゃなかったです。 No, it wasn’t that tough.
    Example ③
    A:
    料理[りょうり]は、どうでしたか? How was the food?
    B:
    あまり おいしくなかったです。 It wasn’t that good.
