    Japanese Grammar – Desires, Direction & Conjunctions

    ■ V-たいです

    Meaning: “I want to do V.”

    Formation:
    Vます + たいです
    Key Point:

    Used to express desire to do something.

    The object marker を often changes to が when expressing desire.

    Similar in function to ほしい (want something).

    Example
    日曜日[にちようび]は、家[いえ]で ゆっくりしたいです。 I want to relax at home on Sunday.

    A:
    休[やす]みは、どうしますか? What will you do on your holiday?
    B:
    北海道[ほっかいどう]に 行[い]きます。馬[うま]に 乗[の]りたいです。 I will go to Hokkaido. I want to ride a horse.

    ■ どこか V-ます

    Meaning: “Do V somewhere”

    Formation:
    どこか + Vます
    Key Point:

    どこか means “somewhere” and is used when the exact location is unknown or unspecified.

    Commonly used with verbs like 行[い]きます (go), 旅行[りょこう]します (travel), 泊[と]まります (stay), etc.

    Can be combined with ~たいです to express desire:

    e.g., どこか 行[い]きたいです (I want to go somewhere).

    Example
    A:
    日曜日[にちようび]、いっしょに どこか 行[い]きませんか? Do you want to go somewhere together on Sunday?
    B:
    いいですね。 That sounds good.

    A:
    今度[こんど]の 休[やす]み、どこか 行[い]きたいですね。 We should go somewhere on our next holiday.
    B:
    そうですね。 That would be nice.

    ■ S1。あと、S2。

    Meaning: “S1. And also, S2.”

    Formation:
    Sentence 1。あと、Sentence 2。
    Key Point:

    あと is a conjunction meaning “and also” or “in addition.”

    Commonly used in spoken language for smooth, natural connection between ideas.

    Example
    A:
    日本[にほん]で 何[なに]が したいですか? What do you want to do in Japan?
    B:
    おいしい おすしが 食[た]べたいです。あと、ラーメンも 食[た]べたいです。 I want to eat delicious sushi. I also want to eat ramen.

    客[きゃく]:
    すみません。枝豆[えだまめ] 2つ、唐揚[からあ]げ 1つ、お願[ねが]いします。 Customer: Excuse me. I’ll have two edamame and one karaage, please.
    店員[てんいん]:
    はい。 Staff: Sure.
    客[きゃく]:
    あと、サラダも お願[ねが]いします。 I’d also like a salad, please.

    ■ 【Place】へ 行[い]きます

    Meaning: “Go to [place]”

    Formation:
    Place + へ + 行[い]きます
    Key Point:

    へ is a direction particle, written as へ but pronounced [e].

    Used with motion verbs like 行[い]きます (go), 来[き]ます (come), and 帰[かえ]ります (return).

    へ can be replaced with に in this context without changing the meaning.

    Example
    A:
    日本[にほん]で、どこに 行[い]きたいですか? Where do you want to go in Japan?
    B:
    沖縄[おきなわ]へ 行[い]きたいです。 I want to go to Okinawa.

    A:
    今度[こんど]、うちへ 遊[あそ]びに 来[き]てください。 Please come and visit us next time.
    B:
    ありがとうございます。 Thank you.

    A:
    いつ、国[くに]へ 帰[かえ]りますか? When will you return to your home country?
    B:
    まだ わかりません。 I don’t know yet.

    ■ S1。それから、S2。

    Meaning: “S1. Then, S2.” / “After that, S2.”

    Formation:
    Sentence 1。それから、Sentence 2。
    Key Point:

    それから is a conjunction used to show the chronological order of actions.

    Used when narrating events one after another.

    Example
    A:
    京都[きょうと]で、何[なに]を しましたか? What did you do in Kyoto?
    B:
    お寺[てら]を 見[み]ました。それから、おいしい 日本[にほん]料理[りょうり]の 店[みせ]に 行[い]きました。 I saw some temples. And then I went to a delicious Japanese restaurant.

    A:
    まず、テーブルの 上[うえ]を 片[かた]づけてください。それから、いすを 並[なら]べてください。 First, clean up the table. Then, arrange the chairs.
    B:
    はい。 Yes.

    ■ S1。それに、S2。

    Meaning: “S1. In addition, S2.”

    Formation:
    Sentence 1。それに、Sentence 2。
    Key Point:

    それに is a conjunction used to add another sentence that has a similar positive or negative evaluation.

    ■ S1。でも、S2。

    Meaning: “S1. But, S2.”

    Formation:
    Sentence 1。でも、Sentence 2。
    Key Point:

    でも is a conjunction used to show contrast between two sentences.

    Example
    A:
    料理[りょうり]は どうでしたか? How was the food?
    B:
    とても おいしかったです。それに、安[やす]かったです。 It was very delicious. It was also cheap.

    A:
    温泉[おんせん]の ホテルは どうでしたか? How was the hot spring hotel?
    B:
    お風呂[ふろ]は よかったです。でも、食[た]べ物[もの]は あまり おいしくなかったです。 The bath was great. But, the food wasn’t very good.
